Tri Rivers Waterway Development Association, Inc. (TRWDA) was formed in 1960 in Dothan, AL. Its objectives, as it is today, are to assist in the effective development, utilization, and maintenance of the ACF waterway and river system resources and services for equitable use to serve the multiple purposes of navigation, water supply, water quality, flood control, hydroelectric power generation, recreation, tourism, environmentally sound fish and wildlife enhancement, and promotion of regional economic development. The Three Rivers involved with TRWDA are the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, and Flint Rivers. The membership of TRWDA draws primarily from state, county, and municipal governments, chamber of commerce's, businesses, industries, and individuals in Southeast Alabama, Southwest Georgia, and Northwest Florida.
TRWDA members share a common desire to utilize and benefit from the federally authorized ACF Navigation project and its effective development to improve the quality of life in the ACF Basin.
The ACF river system basin covers the north-central and southwestern part of Georgia, the southeastern portion of Alabama and a portion of northwest Florida. It encompasses a total drainage area of 19,170 miles of which 76 percent is located in Georgia, 14 percent in Alabama, and 10 percent in Florida. The ACF Basin includes all or parts of 47 counties in Georgia, eight in Alabama and six in Florida. The Navigation project of the ACF system begins below the fall line in Columbus, GA and extends to Apalachicola Bay a distance of 280 miles and also extends 28 miles up the Flint River to Bainbridge, GA for a total navigation distance of 308 miles.
Tri Rivers is involved with many organizations and governments in its day to day business. These include municipal, county, and state governments and agencies; federal elected officials and agencies, including U S Army Corp of Engineers, U S Coast Guard, U S Fish and Wildlife Services. Other organizations TRWDA are involved with includes; Alabama Clean Water Partnership-ACWP, Coalition of Alabama Water way Associations-CAWA, Lake Seminole Association; Friends of Lake Eufaula; River Keeper Organizations, River Way South a heritage and tourism organization and businesses and industries which rely on the ACF system.
